This very clean instrument is easy to play with great action and no fret wear, with the only blemish being some curious marks on the surface in front of the bridge. Its sweet tone is immediately impressive, with even distribution of volume between the lows and the highs. The fretboard is devoid of decoration and the attractive peg head has tuning machines encased in a plated silver covered chamber. The top, of Italian spruce, has a decorated rosette as well as a pick guard in the Italian style inlaid with mother-of-pearl engraved flowers. This mandolin is visually stunning with 17 rosewood ribs. This wonderful bowl back, in excellent original condition, was made in 1958. Raffaele followed in his father’s footsteps as a maker as well, and his company continued after his death in 1934. Raffaele Calace was a famous mandolin virtuoso and composer, the son of Antonio Calace, a renowned instrument maker from Naples, Italy.
